Win at Sheffield FC propels young Countrymen to summit

Sheffield FC Hallam ‘s Under 19’s sit atop the Worksop Van Hire North Midlands Development Football League this morning ( 25th October) after coming from behind to clinch a thrilling 3-2 win at Sheffield Fc Under 19’s, writes Anne Holland for the Hallam FC website.

The young Countrymen enjoy a one-point advantage over Sheffield United Under-19’s-having played a game fewer- but had to battle to clinch the three points in Dronfield.

Charlie Cope levelled the score up at 1-1 just before the half time whistle, and Alex McIllvaney put the visitors in front just after the break. Cope scored again to increase Hallam’s advantage to 3-1, and despite a late penalty for the home side, the Countrymen saw time out to clinch the win and three points.

Khan “Great performance after our rest”

Manager Mick Khan was happier with his side’s showing in the second half than he was with the first half display. “It was our first run-out after a Frustrating three week lay-off “he told Anne. “In the first half we lacked consistency, and simple decision- making was hard for us against a very bright and quick side, who soon got on top of us, forcing our keeper to make two good saves. “

“We conceded a poor goal from their corner after hitting their bar and missing a second opportunity to score” Mick added. “However, we made a breakthrough just before half-time to go in level at 1-1.”

“We made a change in formation for the second half after a few harsh words” Mick revealed. “We came out a lot better and stronger, and soon got ourselves in front. Our keeper made another couple of great saves, but near the end we grabbed a third after good work in the press. They got a very dodgy penalty at the end, but we stayed in there. It was a great performance after our rest.”

“A lesson learned, though” Mick warned. “There’ll be no more weeks off training if we don’t have a game!”

Mick and the Under-19’s are back in action against third-placed Basford United at Sandygate on Thursday, 31st October at 7.45 pm.
