Building Bridges

Having fallen foul of the rain for the past two weeks staff at Hallam pulled out the stops this morning and worked for two hours solid before the pitch was passed as fit for the game with local opponents Worsborough Bridge.

The Countrymen showed their intentions from the first whistle and for periods during the first half Worsborough looked shell shocked.Irrepective of the heavy surface Hallam stuck to their passing game and caused all sorts of problems for the Bridge defence creating chance after chance. Eventually having gone close twice it was Paul Lavender on 32 minutes who gave the home side a deserved lead having had his initial shot saved by the keeper.Minutes later the same player hit a post and Worsborough were happy to hear the half time whistle.

The visitors were more composed in the second half and were soon placing pressure on the Hallam goal but having rode the storm a breakaway on 53 minutes up the hill resulted in Adam Askwith striking an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the bottom right hand corner to make it 2 - 0. The next goal was going to be crucial and although the home side still looked the most likely it was Bridge who grabbed it from a sweet free kick on 63 minutes headed home by Adam Podmore The game was starting to swing and as Bridge broke again on 73 minutes Hallam's man of the match Carlton Dickenson, playing out of position at right back, was caught on the wrong side of his man and a penalty was awarded. Worsborough's Chris White stepped up and drove the ball home for 2- 2.

This was anyone's match now as the game swung from end to end. From another Paul Lavender strike at one end the Bridge broke and won a corner at the other. The home crowd feared the worse but Hallam cleared their lines and the Bridge keeper was forced into the best stop of the game to ensure they shared the spoils.

This could be a happy New Year afterall for Chris Sellars and his team.
