Go West

Well football can be cruel at times and last night at Sandygate another honest performance from the Countrymen ended up in defeat to much improved Dinnington Town.

The weather once again played its part in a match which could have gone either way and the visitors made the most of a wind assisted first half kicking down the slope yet Hallam again were dangerous on the break but just could not find the final ball around the box or the shot on goal that would have lifted the clouds currently sat over Sandygate. The whole season was summed up on 28 minutes when a high hopeful ball was lofted into the Hallam box. It appeared to be going harmlessly over the bar when suddenly it landed on the point where the post and bar join and somehow came back into play. To his credit Dinnington's Grant Allott was first to react and expertly finished to give the visitors the lead. The Countrymen remained under pressure and the only other highlight of the first half was a fantastic save by the Hallam keeper down to his left when the shot look destined for the bottom corner.

Hallam started the second period a goal down but began to play with some confidence and to string a few passes together. They forced several corners before a cross from the right by Carter struck an arm and the referee pointed to the spot. This could and should have been a turning point in the game however the pressure appeared to get to the otherwise man of the match Mark West and his hard low spot kick was well saved by the keeper as Dinnington retained their lead. Although the Countrymen kept pressing they never really found that moment of composer or quality that would have undone their opponents who remained solid all evening and gratefully accepted a 1-0 victory.

The players must now pick themselves up for the visit of Rossington Main on Saturday with the hope that they can get some reward for the hard work and commitment that is there for all to see.
