Posted 28th June 2014 - Posted in Club News Wednesday Legend loses long term battle with Illness It was with sadness that the club learned of John Fanthams bereavement this week after a long illness. John was born in Sheffield and was still Sheffield Wednesday's leading post war goalscorer with 166 goals. He was signed in 1956 and made his Wednesday debut two years later. John firmly establish himself as an able goalscorer in the English top flight for Wednesday, as his 23 goals helped the club to a second place finish in 1960-61. The following season, he netted 24 times, earning him selection for the England under-23 team and his only England cap at full international level. He was an integral part of the Wednesday side that reached the 1966 FA Cup Final and two years later, he passed Redfern Froggatt's post war scoring record. John made 435 appearances for the club, staying until 1969 when he joined Rotherham United. Tony Scanlan, Hallam Vice President and ex Chairman said "I remember asking John if he would take charge of our training sessions which at that time were at the High Storrs School Gym - he refused at first then the very next day he called me to say he would like to do it - these became recognised as the best we had had for some years - as you can imagine from someone with his experience of top managers in the game - innovative and fun. Shortly after I asked Jim McAnearney to be our manager which he accepted and immediately made `Fants` his assistant." Tony went on to say,"This period brought some professionalism to our club - `Fants` was part of this - equally respected and liked by players and committee he had a habit of winning the raffle many times at away club grounds and received some stick from the players on the return coach trip!! A very unassuming , likeable and honest person." Everyone at Hallam sends their sympathy to his wife Carol and two daughters & families at this difficult time.
