Hallam were able to get their first home league win of the season in a hard fought game against Parkgate FC under the lights at Sandygate, running out 1-0 winners thanks to a late Gareth Griffiths goal. After conceding 6 goals in their last two outings, there was a visual improvement defensively with The Countrymen deserving of the clean sheet.

Hallam started the brighter of the two teams, after good build up play from Littlejohn and Waddle, led to the first shot of the match being dragged wide from the edge of the box, shortly followed up by another long range effort from Waddle shooting narrowly over the bar.

Parkgate FC found their way back into the game, firstly Martin Blissett firing wide from a tight angle, before a strong penalty appeal by the Steelmen players, staff and faithful was turned down by referee Glen Whitehead.

The first major chance of the game fell to Hallam’s Sam Fawkes on the half hour mark. After a great through ball which found Fewkes in space on the right hand side of the box, Parkgate ‘keeper Chris Butt got down well to save the one on one shot with his feet. Few chances were created in the last 15 minutes of the first half and the teams went in at the break at 0-0.

The second half started slowly, with neither team creating any clear cut chances, until Parkgate broke down, only to find Archie Sneath in fine form to pull off a strong save from a half volley to deny The Steelmen the breakthrough.

With the match heading towards a goalless draw, the match came to life in the 88th minute, as Parkgate failed to clear their lines properly from another Hallam attack. The Countrymen put the ball back into the box from the left hand side, with The Parkgate keeper spilling at the feet of Gareth Griffiths to bundle the ball over the line and give Hallam the lead going into the impending extra time.

The action wasn’t finished there as Parkgate centre back Brandon Cardwell saw red after a late challenge in the middle of the park. Hallam we able to see out the final few minutes of extra time with relative ease and claim a much needed and deserved 3 points.

Hallam Man of Match – Tyler Bradley.

Tyler responded well after coming back into the team and showed a solid display throughout which is a testament to his character.
