North Ferriby Review from the Gaffer

An eventful Toolstation NCEL Division One opening day for Hallam ended with a fine point from a 1-1 draw at North Ferriby yesterday afternoon. The visitors led 1-0 at the break, following a super strike from Will Wraith ten minutes before the interval; but after Jack McCarthy saw red with around 20 minutes left, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Adam Bolder levelled for the Villagers with a fine half volley with ten minutes to go to share the points.
As you’ll read, the drama started well before the first whistle at the Dransfield Stadium, but Manager Stephen Whitehead told the Hallam FC Website that he was more than satisfied with the point and the performance, writes Colin Muncie.
Stephen, all's well that ends well but it wasn't the best start to the day for you and the squad. Tell us what happened?
SW What can I say? The bus that was going to take us to the game was crashed into setting us back by an hour, which doesn’t help; but thanks to North Ferriby and the officials for delaying the kick off by 15 minutes , we were able to prepare something like we are used to! (Our picture shows Stephen, Jordan Turner, Simon and Wez just after their late arrival)
In the end it was a great result but it could have been even better. What pleased you most about your side today?
SW The togetherness we showed was top drawer. There won’t be many teams who go into that environment -where there are nearly 500 cheering the home team on- and get anything out of the game. I’m proud as punch with the lads; they really did dig in to secure a point, and the atmosphere on the bus home was very good. God knows what it would have been like if we would have taken all 3 points!
How did you see the Jack McCarthy red card? It seemed harsh to many on the terraces.
SW I’ve spoken to Jack and he even admits it was a red. He got sold short and had to go into the tackle, but these things happen in football. The lads showed a willingness not to get beaten on the day, so credit to them.
Overall you must be pleased, and with players to come back how are you feeling about the way things are shaping up?
SW I’m really happy with how things are going. We miss Sam (Smith) now for three Saturdays due to holiday but we have Jordan (Turner, suspended yesterday) to come in. Cal Greaves has had a little set back but one that isn’t too bad, so we look forward to getting him fully fit. It was nice to see Micah (Bishop) back in the shirt too.
Overall I’m really happy. Three points instead of one 1 would have capped the weekend off -but I’m happy with how we started.
