Top Drawer from Everyone at the Club

Posted 07th August 2019 - Posted in Club News

It was a tremendous night for everyone involved with Hallam FC on Tuesday night as the Countrymen welcomed a high-calibre Sheffield United side to Sandygate for a pre-season friendly.

Although the Premier League side ran out 3-0 winners, the NCEL Division One side gave a terrific account of themselves in front of a fantastic crowd of 1024.

The Hallam FC Website caught up with Countrymen Manager Stephen Whitehead after the game, and fielded his thoughts on a memorable evening at the Oldest Football ground in the World. We also asked the Hallam gaffer about another massive contest on Sunday-an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie at home to Staveley Miners Welfare, writes Glenn Poulton for the Hallam FC Website.

Stephen, what a night for Hallam! A brilliant crowd and atmosphere, but what was it like to manage, and what was the reaction of the players?
It was top drawer from everyone at the club and a great game to be the Manager of this fantastic club on such an occasion. We as a club would like to thank Chris (Wilder) on sending such a strong Blades team to give our lads great experience of playing against Premiership quality. The lads were gutted at the decision by the officials for the first goal, as they had worked really hard to get to half time at 0-0 and I thought they deserved that. I had a chat with (Mark) Duffy afterwards and even he wasn’t convinced it had crossed the line!

You must have beeÅ absolutely thrilled by the performance in both halves?
Yeah the lads gave it their all and as we said before it was going to be about doing a lot of work without the ball. Our shape and work rate was fantastic. But in saying that the lads have shown the levels they can get to, so I expect the same in the upcoming games.

The big games keep coming thick and fast .It's the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on Sunday when Staveley are the visitors. How do you approach this one, and what do you expect from them?
Staveley will be strong. They have made some good signings in the summer. We will have to apply ourselves with the same work ethic as we have done recently, and we will hope our quality comes through on the day

No Sam (Smith), but are you likely to be close to full strength?
Yeah we have to allow for key players missing at times. We have Micah (Bishop) Jordan (Turner) and Treas (Reece Treasure) all available so we definitely have good options going forward. We need players to step up to the plate in another great game to play in and in front of what we hope will be another really good crowd.
