Late FA Cup Agony for the Countrymen

v Staveley MWToolstation NCEL Premier Division side Staveley Miners Welfare advanced to the First Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup-and a home tie with Lincoln United, after a battling 2-0 win over Hallam at Sandygate yesterday.

It was a cracking tie watched by another fine crowd of 304 with absolutely nothing in the game entering the final few minutes.

But the encounter turned at the very death in a pivotal few minutes. First, Hallam striker Jordan Turner went desperately close with a far post header after a terrific right-wing cross; then the Trojans raced up the other end for substitute Kurtis Morley to strike from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

With the home side chasing an equaliser, Staveley doubled the advantage and killed the tie when Morley finished coolly after good build up play down the left wing to send Brett Marshall’s squad into the next round, write Ian Jones and Glenn Poulton for the Hallam FC Website.

Hallam’s Manager Stephen Whitehead was delighted with his side’s performance. Speaking to the club website, Stephen agreed that there was nothing in the game as the clock ran down.

“Going into the last ten minutes the game was on a knife edge, if you ask me.” he agreed.” In the 80 minutes it was even with chances, and they were similar ones too. I thought we nullified their main threats and we were in control for large periods of the game. We then have two great chances (picked up by Hallam’s Social Media team); the one from Julian (Lawrence) and then the one we all remember is JT at the back post”.

Stephen is anything but despondent about the way his side are playing.” It’s a cliché, but I’m not going to pick out any of lads again.” he insisted “They were terrific as a whole; we just need to start putting the ball in the net. I’m not too concerned as we’re making chances, so we look forward to putting the finishing right. JT won’t keep missing -he’s too good for that and Reece (Treasure), Bish (Micah Bishop) and now Jason Stokes to add, and with Sam Smith coming back I know we have goals in the team”.

The games come thick and fast for Hallam and it's back to League action at Worsbrough on Wednesday. The Briggers lost heavily at Dronfield on opening day but hit back for a point at Ollerton at the weekend. Stephen is expecting a rigorous examination at Park Road.

“Lee (Morris, Worsbrough Bridge Manager) normally has a well-structured hard working team which look to play.“

Stephen warned “So our standards - how we apply ourselves and our work rate- will have to be at the same levels as they have been so far this season. Let’s hope we can start scoring some goals."

Hallam are back in Toolstation NCEL Division One action at Worsbrough Bridge on Wednesday evening, kick Off 7.45pm.
